The official (and used) language is Dutch, but 90% of the local population speak Papiamento, a Creole dialect that is a mixture of Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and English. Spanish and English are also widely spoken, particularly in Willemstad.
The island is discovered in 1493 by the Portuguese discovery Alonso de Ojeda and in the old day's it was an important port for the West. There is much architecture from this old day's to be seen. Willemstad is the capital where the government resides.
Also the underwater world is unique and due to the good climate and warm seawater is Curacao a very nice island to dive.
The unit of currency is the Netherlands Antilles guilder, the international symbol is ANG. This monetary unit is (like the US dollar) divided into 100 cents. The guilder (ANG) has been pegged to the US dollar at the exchange rate of US$ 1.00= ANG. 1.78. The rate of exchange offered by shops and hotels ranges from ANG 1.75 to ANG 1.80. Major credit cards and US dollars are widely accepted.
Curacao upholds similar standards of medical care as the Dutch. All specialists (about 85) attended an excellent education in Holland or the United States. Elderly people can safely reside on the island. Body will need to adjust to this tropical climate, which will take approximately 10 days. Diseases like malaria and yellow fever are uncommon on the island and there is no need for any vaccination for your stay on Curacao. In Curaçao a pharmacy is called a BOTICA, which also operates as a drugstore. There are about 30 Boticas available, spread all over the island, so there should be no need to travel far.
The Tax and IRS system in Curaçao is comparable to the Dutch system. There are two kinds of tax systems for buying a house that you will have to deal whit if you buy a house on Curacao.
When you own real estate on Curacao, you will have to pay 5% tax over the value of you property if it's a lot and 6% if it's a home.
When you buy a lot or a house on Curacao you will have to pay 4% transfer tax.
